What to Expect at a Yoga Retreat in Portugal: A Day in the Life of a Zenaa Retreat

When: Thursday 20 – Tuesday 25 May 2027 · Near Tavira, Algarve, Portugal

Perfect For: Solo Traveller, Two Friends or a Couple Sharing

Picture this: it’s late May in the Algarve, the summer heat hasn’t yet arrived, and the countryside around Tavira is still green and full of birdsong. You’re staying at a peaceful casa with two pools and a natural swimming pond, with nowhere to be and nothing to prove. The whole day stretches ahead, unhurried and entirely your own.

If you’ve never been on a wellness retreat, it’s hard to picture what the days actually hold. “What does a typical day look like?” is the question we’re asked most at Zenaa Retreats, so here’s a walk through it. No two days are quite the same, but each is shaped around the same intention: to move your body, nourish your mind, reconnect with yourself, and soak up the slow, sun-warmed rhythm of southern Portugal.

A Sun-Soaked Setting to Call Home

Our home for the retreat is a peaceful casa set in the countryside near Tavira, blending modern comfort with relaxed Portuguese elegance. There are two swimming pools, a natural swimming pond ringed by landscaped gardens, and a light, airy yoga studio surrounded by greenery.

In your downtime, find a quiet corner of the grounds with a book, drift between the pools, sit by the lake and watch the wildlife, or book yourself a full body massage. It’s the kind of place where an afternoon disappears without you noticing.

Every room is ensuite, and there are three to choose from:

  • Double Occupancy w/ Ensuite (from £1,399pp) - beds that can be set as a king or a twin, plus a private outdoor space. Ideal whether you’re travelling with a partner or a friend, or joining solo and happy to share.
  • Single Occupancy w/ Ensuite (£1,899) - a beautiful room of your own, for solo travellers or anyone who’d rather not share.
  • Deluxe Single Occupancy w/ Ensuite (£2,199) - our largest and most premium single room, with an outdoor space of your own. Somewhere quiet to sit with a coffee, journal, or unwind between practices without leaving your room.

“The Portugal Retreat at Casa Terra was sublime. Katie is a talented, warm and generous curator of experience. The house, set in a beautiful landscape, was spacious, welcoming and hugely relaxing. The yoga shala, surrounded by greenery, the sound of birdsong, and blue sky was the perfect place to centre ourselves and do some deep body work. And the food, the food!! Chef Miia created every meal to perfection. And if all that wasn’t enough, there was also a natural pond for swimming and a day at the beach. Truly a five star experience - highly recommended. Thank you for all your hard work Katie - we were all nourished and delighted by the experience.”

A Gentle Start to the Morning

Mornings begin quietly. No blaring alarms, no rushed commute, just sunlight warming the terrace and the sound of birds. Wake early for a coffee in the gardens, journal beside the pool, or enjoy a few uninterrupted moments before the group gathers.

Yoga workshops start at 8:30am, while the air is still fresh. We practise in the shala with the doors open to the greenery: sessions that wake the body up properly and leave you refreshed rather than exhausted. They’re suitable for all levels, whether you practise every week or haven’t stepped on a mat in years, with plenty of guidance and modifications throughout.

Afterwards, mindfulness practice: meditation, yoga nidra, or journalling, depending on the day. It’s the part guests tell us they didn’t know they needed.

Long, Leisurely Mealtimes

Then comes a favourite part of the day. Meals are prepared by our local private chef using fresh, seasonal ingredients, and eaten al fresco around a long table filled with stories, laughter and second helpings. There is always dessert.

We take a balanced, fad-free approach: no juice cleanses, no pressure. Long, lingering lunches and dinners under the Portuguese sky are a Zenaa Portugal hallmark, and the food is the thing guests mention first when they get home.

“I have just returned from a Zenaa Retreat in Portugal and must say that it was one of the best holidays I have ever been on. The venue is stunning with gorgeous living accommodation, three swimming pools, beautiful grounds and a light and airy studio. The food was not only healthy, it tasted delicious! The daily yoga sessions were excellent. The addition of meditation, yoga nidra and journalling workshops made the whole experience truly relaxing.”

Slow Afternoons & Space to Breathe

One of the most special things about a yoga retreat in Portugal is the spaciousness of the day. Unlike a packed sightseeing holiday, retreat life gives you something rare: time that’s simply your own. Afternoons are left intentionally open. Swim, nap in the shade, take a scenic hike into the hills, or do nothing at all.

May is the sweet spot for this. It’s warm enough for the pool but cool enough to walk properly, and the locals will tell you it’s the most beautiful month of the year.

Making Memories Beyond the Mat

Some of the most memorable moments happen entirely off the mat. Midway through the week we head into Tavira, one of the loveliest towns in the Algarve, for an evening of wandering cobbled streets, browsing along the river and eating somewhere relaxed and local. There’s also a guided walk through the surrounding countryside, and time set aside to simply be somewhere beautiful together.

At Zenaa, it’s all about balance: movement and stillness, nourishment and joy, connection and solitude.

Evenings Made for Connection

As evening arrives, the pace softens. Gentle yoga at 6pm unwinds the body and settles the mind before dinner at 7:30pm, and then the evening opens up: good food, a glass of local wine, real conversation, and the sky going pink over the gardens.

Connection is at our core. It’s during these times that strangers become friends: no distractions, shared experiences, and the time to properly talk and listen.

Is a Yoga Retreat Right for You?

Many guests arrive nervous, especially if they’re travelling solo or new to yoga, but that uncertainty quickly melts away. Zenaa Retreats are for the “yoga curious,” the seasoned yogis, the burnt-out professionals, the busy parents, and anyone craving a pause from everyday life. Plenty of our Portugal guests tell us it was their first ever retreat, and that the pace and the welcome made it easy.

Come with an open mind, and you’ll leave with laughter, stories, and a whole gaggle of new friends.

A Retreat That Stays With You

The most surprising thing about a wellness retreat isn’t the schedule, it’s how different you feel afterwards. Guests leave lighter, calmer, more energised, and more connected to themselves than they’ve been in months. Not from one dramatic transformation, but the accumulation of simple things done well: nourishing food, meaningful connection, movement, nature, rest, and space to breathe.

“Portugal was the second retreat I’ve been to with Katie, I intend to go to at least one a year. Wholeheartedly recommend!! Amazing attention to detail- venue, yoga, food, activities- all arranged with such care. I feel looked after, rested, worked and stretched and relaxed, it’s the ultimate self care!!”

Your Questions Answered

Where is the Zenaa Portugal yoga retreat held?

The retreat takes place near Tavira in the Algarve, southern Portugal, at a peaceful casa that blends modern comfort with relaxed Portuguese elegance. The venue has two swimming pools, a natural swimming pond, beautifully landscaped gardens and a light, airy yoga studio. The historic town of Tavira is a short transfer away, and the Algarve coast is easily reached for trips out.

How long is the Portugal retreat, and when does it run?

The Portugal Wellness Retreat runs for five nights, from Thursday 20 to Tuesday 25 May 2027. Late May is widely considered the perfect time to visit the Algarve: warm but not too hot, the spring flowers still in bloom, and the summer crowds not yet arrived.

What’s the nearest airport, and how do the transfers work?

The nearest airport is Faro (FAO), around 30 minutes from the casa by car, with direct flights from Bristol, Gatwick and Heathrow. Flights and airport transfers aren’t included in the retreat price, but we publish suggested flight times on the retreat page. Send us your flight details once booked and we’ll match you into a shared transfer where we can.

How much does the Portugal retreat cost, and what’s included?

Prices start at £1,399pp for a Double Occupancy w/ Ensuite, £1,899 for a Single Occupancy w/ Ensuite, and £2,199 for the Deluxe Single Occupancy w/ Ensuite, our largest and most premium single room with its own outdoor space. That includes five nights’ accommodation, a private chef, daily yoga, mindfulness practices and your Tavira excursion. You can pay in full or spread the cost over 3 monthly payments.

Is the Portugal retreat suitable for first-time retreaters?

Yes. Many Portugal guests describe it as their first ever yoga retreat. The pace is gentle, the venue is welcoming, and the yoga is taught at all levels with modifications throughout. Guests consistently describe Zenaa as accessible and carefully orchestrated, which makes it a good place to start.

Can I come to the Portugal retreat on my own?

Yes, solo travellers are warmly welcomed and many of our guests travel alone. There’s a Single Occupancy w/ Ensuite and a Deluxe Single Occupancy w/ Ensuite if you’d like your own space, or you can book one bed in the Double Occupancy w/ Ensuite set as a twin and we’ll pair you with another guest (solo sharing is female only). With an intentionally small group, it’s easy to feel at home from the moment you arrive.
